Things to see and do
Our guests often comment on how many things there are to do in this area. Whichever way you drive, walk or go by boat, there is beautiful scenery in all directions. We have put together a small selection of ideas to make your holiday varied and interesting and we have included a few useful weblinks.
In Appin
- Hire bikes and go by ferry to explore the Isle of Lismore with its broch, castles and ancient Christian history.
- Go pony trekking along the shores and round the hills.
- Discover our many local walks which include our Community Woodland, the 450m hill behind our house, the old railway line, several forest tracks, the shore by the castle, and the limestone arch at Port Appin.
- Watch the sun set behind Stalker Castle from the Jubilee Bridge.
- Eat and drink in our excellent local restaurants, such as the Airds Hotel, the Pierhouse Hotel,The Creagan Inn and Castle Stalker View Café, or have your own barbecue here.
- Hire a sailing dinghy or a motor boat to see seals and birds or to go fishing.
- Enjoy our garden at all times of day and several others nearby.
- Delve into history - the Appin Murder of the Red Fox, Colin Campbell of Glenure, on which R.L.Stevenson based his novel 'Kidnapped'; Stalker Castle, originally erected about 1300; the Ship on the Rock, a galley carved in the stone; Glenstockdale ancient settlements; the memorial to the Stewarts slain at Culloden in Appin graveyard; the historic Isle of Lismore.

To the North
- Glencoe has stunning scenery and superb walking and climbing, in both winter and summer.
- Kinlochleven has the Ice Factor, the newest and largest man-made ice wall in Europe.
- Fort William has many good shops, the Ben Nevis whisky distillery and the Jacobite steam train starts here on its way to Mallaig and the white sand beaches of Morar.
- Ben Nevis is the highest mountain in Britain. Have you climbed it!?
- Nevis Range provides skiing in winter, a spectacular ride in a gondola up the mountain in summer and is the site for the Mountain Bike World Cup.
- Loch Ness has its very own famous monster!
- The Caledonian Canal goes from the west coast to the east, through Loch Ness, and has a dramatic series of locks known as Neptunes Staircase.
- The Road to the Isles is a wonderful drive to the Isle of Skye.
- Ardnamurchan Point is the most western point of Britain.

To the South
- Oban is a scenic holiday town and Gateway to the Isles. This is where you get ferries to many islands including Mull, the sacred Isle of Iona, Tiree, Colonsay, Barra. There are good shops, restaurants and a distillery.
- The Sea Life Centre is great for children.
- The Isle of Mull is the home of Balamory, Duart Castle, a minature railway to Torosay Castle and some excellent wildlife tours.
- Taynuilt has the Bonawe Historic Iron Furnace, cruises on Loch Etive and the Inverawe Smokehouse & Fisheries.
- Cruachan Power Station is inside the mountain.
- The Bridge over the Atlantic takes you to Easdale, the slate island, and the Isle of Luing, with its own breed of cattle.
- Kilmartin is a historic area with many standing stones, burial chambers and site of the ancient kingdom of Scotland.
- The Glorious Gardens of Argyll and Bute, of which we are a member, can be found throughout Argyll.

The Islands
- From Oban there are ferries to many of islands including Mull, the sacred Isle of Iona, Tiree, Colonsay and Barra.
- The Isle of Mull has Duart Castle, a minature railway to Torosay Castle and some excellent wildlife tours. Its main town, Tobermory is also the home of Balamory.
- If weather permits you can also visit Staffa with its famous Fingal's cave.
